Smart Compression Garment

We are developing smart compression garments that use a wire-fabric mechanism to provide optimal compression to muscle and apply torsional assistive force to joint. These robots will augment the capabilities of healthy individuals (e.g., improved walking stability) in addition to assisting those with muscle weakness or patients who suffer from physical or neurological disorders.  As compared to conventional compression garment, these systems help the wearer more efficiently by controlling the level of compression force for the operating condition (e.g., high compression in stance phase and low compression in swing phase).

Active Compression Mechanism

We proposed a new sleeve-type compression garment that alters its compression force by employing a wire-fabric based mechanism. The proposed garment was manufactured by integrating two-layered fabrics with a soft pressure sensor, a wire actuation system, and a feedback controller.
